We are organic chemists who apply the skills in organic chemistry to answer fundamental questions in our own field, and based on that to develop new tools to help advance other relevant areas such as chemical biology and materials science.

Copper catalysis project recieves funding from the ACS-PRF (ND)

We are grateful to the American Chemical Society for the generous support of our project on copper catalysis in the form of a New Direction Grant from the Petroleum Research Fund for the next two years.

Great job Miguel and Kevin! The chapter lays out the procedures of orthogonal/bioorthogonal intracellular labeling using the combination of SNAP/CLIP-tags and bioorthogonal chemistry (strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition and inverse-demand Diels-Alder reaction).

Congratulations, Dr. Liu! Champagne is saved for a later time to pop. Great job in the past 4+ years for expanding our understanding of copper-catalyzed oxidation reactions.

This work demonstrates the collective power of protein (SNAP/CLIP) tags and bioorthogonal reactions in intracellular dual-labeling experiments. Thanks to everyone who's involved in contributing to this work. The revision could not have been done on time if Miguel did not happen to be back in Tallahassee during the initial chaotic phase of the coronavirus pandemic.

It's been a while...

Since the last update, Miguel has graduated with his PhD, Peiye finally has the alkynyltriazole synthesis paper published, and the NSF has reaffirmed its continuous support to our research. Our group hosted Kristofer Kristofferson from Ohio Northern University as a REU student in the summer of 2019. Also, our REU alumnus Brandon has returned as a graduate student, while Kevin joined our group as part of Class 2024. We also welcomed Justin Lee, Dr. Manoj Manna, Dan Stone, and Jared Cossin as new additions. So it has been a while!

Miguel expanded the substrate scope of SNAP-tag, an important tool in bioconjugate chemistry. In addition to benzylguanine-type substrates, 5-pyridylmethylguanine (5PG) derivatives are also taken up by SNAP-tag with comparable efficiencies.

This paper offers a structural design and describes the photophysical studies of an excited state proton transfer dye that is capable of emitting at three frequency regions close to three primary colors.

Good luck to Brandon Nusser

After spending a scorching summer in Tallahassee on an REU project, Brandon is heading back to California to start his senior year.

Quinton Meisner defended his PhD dissertation. Congratulations Dr. Meisner!

After champagnes were popped and funny costumes were donned, Quinton is heading to the Argonne National Laboratory for a postdoctoral fellowship.

The syntheses of cyanoalkynes and 5-cyano-1,2,3-triazoles are described in this paper, as well as an interesting mechanistic model of the ruthenium-catalyzed 5-cyano-1,2,3-triazole formation.

March 24, 2018

This paper describes the effect of intramolecular hydrogen bonds with triazole on the fluorescence properties of triazolyl-containing dyes.

March 24, 2018

This paper is about the molecular design of zinc-sensitive fluorescent dyes containing an anilinyl-anchored electron transfer switch.
